Talk: Roger Casement's Natural History Collections ***CANCELLED***
Free
Apologies, but this talk has been cancelled due to unforeseen events.
Drop into The Wonder Cabinet and meet Assistant Keeper, Dr Aidan O'Hanlon, for his talk on Roger Casement's natural history collections.
Roger Casement (1864–1916), also known as Sir Roger Casement CMG, was a diplomat and Irish revolutionary executed for high treason by the United Kingdom during World War I. Before his involvement in the fight for Irish independence, Casement was a renowned humanitarian who exposed the brutal exploitation of indigenous peoples in colonial Africa and South America. During his postings as a consul for the British Foreign Office, Casement also collected numerous animal and plant specimens for Irish institutions including the National Museum of Ireland, the National Botanic Gardens and Dublin Zoo. Casement’s collections and correspondences highlight his connections with prominent Irish naturalists, and reveal his deep interest in the natural world, and love of animals in particular. This talk presents an overview of Casement’s natural history collections, highlighting his lesser-known activity as a naturalist, and shedding new light on an overlooked aspect of a significant historical figure.
No booking required. This talk is located at The Wonder Cabinet. Places are limited and on a first come, first served basis. Wheelchair accessible.
