There are also counters to cut out, or, you can use buttons, beads or shells as counters.
Nine's Men Morris was very popular all over Medieval Europe. There have been the remains of Nine Men's Morris boards carved into pieces of stone and wood dating to Viking Ireland and Medieval Ireland. These are on display at the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology.
