The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920
The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920. The town was destroyed when a group of Black and Tans from Gormanstown Military Barracks carried out a reprisal burning for the IRA killing of two policemen. This family has saved some of their household belongings seen mounted on a cart, and are about to leave the scene of their former home, which lies in smouldering ruins in the background. The destruction of the town captured international attention.Photograph by press photographer Joseph Cashman.
