Arming the Volunteers - Experimenting and Innovating

Exploded revolver, Wexford / Carlow, c. 1920 / 1921

Exploded revolver, Wexford / Carlow, c. 1920 / 1921

This six chambered revolver was used in IRA raids for arms and general hold-ups by the Wexford and Carlow Brigades during the War of Independence. As there was a severe shortage of ammunition, the brigade members attempted to recharge the used cartridge cases with a mixture of powder and gelignite. Despite some initial success the revolver exploded during an action in County Carlow, blowing off two chambers and the bridge of the barrel.
