Learn About: Extinction

Giant Irish Deer fossils in the NMI - Natural History

Chances are you've heard the word extinction before, but what does it actually mean? And what causes an animal to go extinct?

Watch this series of videos to learn all about what extinction is and what animals have gone extinct in Ireland - you may be surprised by one of them!

Out of this World

Extinction isn't restricted to Ireland of course - animals have gone extinct all over the world. In the previous videos you will have seen the difference between animals that are locally extinct and animals that are globally extinct. The Giant Irish Deer went globally extinct because of natural causes, but sometimes, humans are to blame. Watch these two short videos about two famous animals that went extinct because of human activity.
