Take Your Seats explores chair design from concept to execution, and features some iconic chairs that have shaped the way we sit.
Located in the Four Centuries of Furniture exhibition, Take Your Seats is an interactive gallery where you can delve into the world of chairs and then design your own, inspired by the extraordinary examples around you!
Featured chairs include Michael Thonet's Bentwood chair of 1859, Gerrit Rietveld's Zig-Zag chair of 1934, and Verner Panton's S Chair of 1960, among many others. Read about the figures and ideas behind their creation in the cards at the sides of the gallery.
Don't miss the story of a pioneer of furniture design and production, Thomas Chippendale, in "A Tale of Two Chairs." You can see an 18th century example of one of his designs beside a modern interpretation of a traditional chair by French designer, Philippe Starck.
Look out for an interactive display panel that considers why a chair is harder to design than a skyscraper, by examining all the elements of design that contribute to the creation of the perfect seat.
After exploring the gallery, use the paper provided to draw your own chair, using all you have learned. Bring your design home or hang it up to inspire others!
