As part of a new temporary exhibition Mary Anne Fanning: Remembering our Community Midwives (opening 3 October 2024)the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life will host a talk by Lisa McGeeney, registered nurse, midwife and public health nurse with an MA in Local History.

This talk examines how the professionalisation and development of nursing and midwifery in the 19th Century was reflected in the poor-law unions between 1882 and 1922. 

Lisa McGeeney is a registered nurse, midwife and public health nurse. She received a Masters degree in Local History from the University of Limerick in 2020 and is currently undertaking her PhD.
 
Following this talk, visitors are invited to explore the exhibition located on Level B, and to observe the objects on display and listen to the audio recordings which are available. There is also an opportunity to sit and reflect in the Reminiscence and Sitting Area and to share your memories in our special My Midwife Memory book. By recording your memory, you will be contributing to community-led research on this topic which may be reproduced in print or online by curator Emma Laffey and/or the Irish Community Archive Network.
