Mrs Charlotte Despard, Cleeve’s Condensed Milk Factory (Limerick), 1920

Mrs Charlotte Despard, a suffragist, socialist and Sinn Féin activist, who was also the sister of Lord Lieutenant French, pictured with the workers of Cleeve’s Condensed Milk Factory (Limerick), after it was destroyed by British Forces in 1920. Cleeve’s employed up to 1,000 workers, mostly women, and was a centre of trade union activity. It was an important part of the local economy, and also a major manufacturer and supplier of products to the British Empire.
