The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920

The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920

The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920. The town was destroyed when a group of Black and Tans from Gormanstown Military Barracks carried out a reprisal burning for the IRA killing of two policemen. This family has saved some of their household belongings seen mounted on a cart, and are about to leave the scene of their former home, which lies in smouldering ruins in the background. The destruction of the town captured international attention.
