Raids and Reprisals - British Reprisals

Reprisal at Midleton, Co. Cork, January 1921

Reprisal at Midleton, Co. Cork, January 1921

A scene of agricultural machinery destroyed at Midleton in Co. Cork, by the British forces as a reprisal on 1 January 1921 for the deaths of three RIC and Black and Tan members in December 1920. Destroying the agricultural sector not only terrorised the population, but also crippled the local economy.
Photograph by W.D. Hogan of 56 Henry Street, Dublin.
